Mark Skaggs - Zynga Games
Game Developer
San Francisco, CA
Keynote Speaker
Mark has spent many years in the Games industry, serving as EP for Westwood Games, Electronic Arts and was founder and COO of Trilogy Studios. Now Mark serves as EP at Zynga Games.
A certified Navy brat, Mark Skaggs was born on the island of Guam and grew up in various cities across the U.S. as well as in Japan. When he got into computers, it didn't stop his roving lifestyle -- dispelling the cliché that computer work is a sedentary occupation.
First stop was Dallas and a software engineering job at Texas Instruments. Next stop was a small software shop to create the PC version of the award-winning illustration program FreeHand, now published by Adobe. Work there took him back to Japan and as far away as Russia, where in the early 1990s he started a programming team to create add-ons for FreeHand. (As the Cold War was coming to a close, the Russkies embraced their American compatriot, spiritually bound by their universal love of programming code). Soon Skaggs felt a deep yearning within. "I had an MBA as well as a computer engineering degree," he says, "and I really wanted to do something with it."
The siren song of gaming lured him and he started a small video game company in Texas called Tetragon. His team cranked out a couple of 3DO’ titles and a Playstation’ title, then moved to California to produce games for Virgin Interactive Entertainment. He handled every project the company threw at him, developing titles for the Playstation’, the N64’ and the PC. He quickly developed a reputation for being able to bring in games on time and under budget.
